Transportation Planner

 Mount Ascutney Regional Commission (MARC) is seeking a Planner to join our team.

Planner: The Commission seeks a Planner to assist with our transportation program. The planner will be expected to oversee the region’s multi-modal transportation planning program, which includes:

  • Coordinating activities with town and Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) officials on issues related to planning and project design and implementation;
  • Facilitating public involvement in transportation decisions;
  • Providing technical assistance to towns, non-profits, and other interested groups on transportation issues;
  • Assisting towns or non-profits in funding, conceptual planning and grant writing for transportation enhancements, pedestrian, and multi-use trail projects;
  • Advising VTrans on policy issues, serving on technical and/or advisory committees as requested.

The position requires a bachelor’s or master’s degree in planning or a related field with 2-4 years of related professional experience. The candidate must have excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Experience using Microsoft products is required. The candidate must have the ability to use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software and ESRI GIS-based field data collection apps. The ability to use graphics software (e.g. Sketch Up, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) is preferred. 

Starting salary is between $50,000 to $60,000, depending on education and experience. The MARC has an excellent benefits package which includes medical, dental, vision, short- and long-term disability insurances, and enrollment in the Vermont Municipal Employees Retirement System.

MARC serves a 10-town area in southeast-central Vermont. Given the small size of the region, we work very closely with our member towns. Although the region is rural, we also have excellent recreational and cultural opportunities in and around the region.

Senior Planner

The Mount Ascutney Regional Commission is seeking a Senior Planner with land use experience to join our team. The planner will be expected to serve as the Zoning Administrator or Assistant Zoning Administrator for member towns, including Windsor, Weathersfield and Ludlow. This will include staffing or assisting to staff local zoning offices, handling zoning and development review applications, being a resource for applicants, issuing zoning permits, enforcement, staffing local Planning Commissions, Zoning Boards and/or Development Review Boards, and assisting with preparing land use bylaw amendments. The planner may also assist with our regional land use planning program as time allows.

This position involves working closely with local, state and federal officials in a variety of capacities. The planner will need to provide staff assistance to various boards and committees.

The position requires a bachelor’s or master’s degree in planning or a related field with a minimum of 5-8 years of professional planning experience. The candidate must have excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Experience using Microsoft products is required. The ability to use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and graphics software (e.g. Sketch Up, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) is preferred. AICP and CFM certifications are desirable, but not required. A successful applicant must demonstrate experience with administering zoning, subdivision and flood hazard bylaws.
