Woolson Block Residential Redevelopment in Springfield
The Woolson Block, a previously vacant historic mixed-use building located in the center of downtown Springfield, was originally built in 1868 for commercial use. Housing Vermont together with Springfield Housing Authority have recently completed an $8.6M renovation project. The Mount Ascutney Regional Commission provided $175,000 in Brownfields Revolving Loan funding for asbestos abatement towards the project.
Woolson Block now features 15 new affordable rental units, 3,400 sq. ft of new commercial space with 2,000 sq. ft. of optional space; and four youth transitional housing units with a manager’s apartment. A fully accessible entrance and interior elevator were also installed. The historic façade has been preserved and the interior space has incorporated the original windows and high ceilings in a contemporary open floorplan design.

Goodyear Solar in Windsor- A Brownfields Cleanup Success Story
Last fall, 2,000 tons of asbestos containing building debris was removed from a 3.2-acre site at the historic Goodyear Plant in Windsor at a cost of $400,000 funded by EPA. A $1.4 million solar array was installed over the winter. The site is now generating 500 kilowatts of solar power towards the region’s renewal energy goal and has eliminated a hazardous exposure risk to the community.
